Ralph Boteler 
Ralph was born about 1385.1 Ralph's father was Thomas Boteler and his mother was Alice De Beauchamp. His paternal grandparents were William Boteler and Joan De Sudeley; his maternal grandparents were Thomas De Beauchamp and Catherine Katherine De Mortimer. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Joan and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the four children. He died in 1473.1 General Notes

Sir Ralph Boteler, K.G., of Sudeley Castle, brother of John Boteler, who d. s. p., and son of Thomas Boteler, whose mother was Joane de Sudeley as above. This Ralph Boteler becoming a person of eminence, temp. Henry VI, was created, by letters patent, 10 September, 1441, Baron Sudeley. This nobleman, being a strenuous Lancastrian, excused himself from coming to parliament after the accession of Edward IV [1461], by the reason of his advanced age, and had so much favour shown him that he obtained letters patent of exemption from the duty during life. He was afterwards, however, attached and brought prisoner to London, when it is stated that, as he was departing from his seat, he cast a lingering look upon Sudeley Castle and exclaimed, "Sudeley Castle, thou art the traytor, not I." This castle he is said to have built out of the spoils he had obtained in the wars of France. Leland tells us, "The Lord Sudeley that builded the castle was a famous man of war in King Henry's the fifth and sixth dayes, and was an admiral (as I have heard) on sea; whereupon it was supposed and spoken that it was partly builded ex spoils Gallorum; and some speake of a towre in it called Portmare's Towre, that it should be made of a ransom of his." From its present remains, it would seem that Fuller does not exaggerate when in his quaint phraseology he declares, "It was of subjects' castles the most handsome habitation, and of subjects' habitations the strongest castle." These relics, however, would rather indicate its having been a superb castellated mansion than a baronial fortress.* He m. Alice, sister and heir of Sir William Deincourt, but, as he left no issue, at his decease in 1473, the Barony became extinct, but the barony by writ fell into abeyance between his sisters as co-heirs, namely, Elizabeth, m. to Sir John Norbury, and Joane, m. to Hamond Belknap, Esq.
* Sudeley Castle, afterwards the residence of Lord Seymour, of Sudeley, and his wife Queen Catherine Parr, was granted by Queen Mary to Sir John Brydges, of Coberley, who also took title from it as Lord Chandos, of Sudeley. From the family of Brydges, Sudeley passed to that of Pitt, and was eventually purchased by Messrs. John and William Dent, of Worcester.
