Ethelred "Dred" was born after 1774 in Edgecombe Co. NC. Ethelred "Dred"'s father was Aaron Hargrove and his mother was Unity Proctor. His paternal grandparents were John Hargrove and Judith Burwell; his maternal grandparents were John Gray Proctor and Mary Bennet. He had a brother and eight sisters, named John, Penelope, Anna "Nancy", Sarah Elizabeth "Sally", Charity, Nancy, Inda Judith "Judah", Delilah and Patience.
