His paternal grandparents were Henry I (Niger) of Bavaria Duke of Bavaria and Ulfhild (Wulfhilde) Saxony; his maternal grandparents were Lothaire Carolingians Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and Richensa of Northeim.
