Her paternal grandparents were John William Spradley and Nancy Blackman; her maternal grandparents were Sanford Vandiver McGinnis and Mary Jane Falkner. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Spurgeon Kinchler, Sr, Clarence Victor, Esten Graves, Delaler Lucille and Lilledge Oreba. She was the third youngest of the six children.
