Her paternal grandparents were Napoleon Bonapart Spradley and Minerva Adalaide Kirby. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph Wellington, Lewis Harold, Sr., Margie B., Laura Naomi and Beulah. She was the third oldest of the six children.
