certificate lists her pob as Shelby Co., AL, which disagrees with other
records. She was separated from Jim Whitten at date of her death. Living
in either Inglewood or Norwood, Al, both suburbs of Birmingham. Jim was
in Gadsden, AL. Jacqueline and Margaret lived with their mother, and
moved to Gadsden upon her death. Jim Whitten carved her headstone. Died
from Pellagra. Her mother attended to her in the hospital at time of her
death, but young daughters Jacqueline and Margaret provided her sole care
in time leading to her death. She was in the Jefferson County Home for
perhaps five years prior to her death. Pellagra, the disease from which

Pellagra: A disease caused by a deficient diet or failure of the body to
absorb niacin (one of the B complex vitamins) or an amino acid
(tryptophan). Deficiencies: Pellagra, the classic niacin deficiency
disease, is characterized by bilateral dermatitis in sun exposed areas,
glossitis, diarrhea, and dementia. Often associated with a largely cereal
diet such as maize or sorghum, the disease is now rarely seen in
industrialized countries but still appears in India, China, and Africa.
Pellagra is often associated with other micronutrient deficiencies and
may also develop in cases of disturbed tryptophan metabolism (carcinoid
syndrome, Hartnup's).
