Amos J. Spradley 
Amos J. was born on December 16th, 1883 in Shelby Co., AL.1 Amos J.'s father was John William Spradley and his mother was Sarah Carrie Cashatt. His paternal grandparents were Manning C. Spradley and Louisa Delula Chritzberg. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George Osha, Shirley Clinton, Hursie B., Alvie and Alice. He was the oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 86 on December 3rd, 1970 in Sterrett, Shelby Co., AL. He was buried in Sterrett Cemetery, Sterrett, Shelby Co., AL. I sojourned to Sterrett, Shelby Co., AL on 21 Feb 2002 and 22 Feb 2002.
Both visits were short because I was squeezing my time between business
trips and genealogy research. On the morning of 21 Feb 2002 before
business, I was able to glean some information at the 1854 Old Courthouse
Museum and Archives in Columbiana, AL. After business in the late
evening, I spoke with a lady in a store near the Sterrett Cemetery to
find out where Ebenezer Cemetery was located. After she informed me about
the location I pulled out and traveled a short distance to Sterrett
Cemetery. Quickly I started copying names and dates of Spradleys'
headstones for the evening was about to end. A few minutes later three
youths, two girls and a boy driving, pulled up and one of the girls
shouted, "I can show you where Ebenezer Cemetery is located. Just follow
us." I ran to my car and pulled in behind them. Journeying for a few
miles we pulled up at Ebenezer Cemetery. The girl in front passenger side
told me to drive home safely. I asked her if she was related to the
people buried here. "No, but I know how it is when visiting a cemetery.
My Mother died when I was seven and I visit her from time to time." I
thanked her and started copying before the sun set. The next day after my
business affairs I revisited Ebenezer Cemetery and confirmed my previous
copying with better light. I also transcribed information off a plaque,
nailed on the front of the church: "Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church.
Constituted Feb. 22, 1868." Leaving Ebenezer Church, I trekked north on
Highway 55 to Sterrett Cemetery. When I arrived, a funeral was taking
place at one end of the cemetery. After coping several headstones the
funeral ended and I was able to survey the other side of the cemetery.
There were several folks still there talking in different little groups.
I approached three elderly ladies and asked them if they knew anything
about Shirley C. Spradley buried near them. They told me his middle name
was Clinton and he was a brother to Amos. Then one of them said Tiny
would know. Tiny was very informative but she said Mr. McGuire will know
more. Mr. McGuire stated that Amos and Shirley were brothers and that
Amos' nickname was Tobe and Shirley's was Shull. We walked to George O.
Spardley's grave while he informed me that George was the brother to Amos
and Shirley. "They were sawmillers and I remember Shull cutting his own
wood to build his home. I am working on the house now." Later the ladies
told me visit the Old Sterrett Cemetery and pointed the way. Tiny gave me
her phone number. I inscribed several headstones there. It was one of
those great unfolding genealogy discoveries. Written by Ron Bridges on 24

Amos J. and Emma were married in a religious ceremony on February 15th, 1905 in Sterrett, Shelby Co., AL.1 They had six sons and a daughter, named Silas Buford, Medral E., Amos J., Jr., Herbet Clarence, Guin, Jake B. and Vergie.

In the 1904 - 1906 Shelby County records there is another entry on page
107 which has the marriage date as 26 Feb 1905. On the 15 Feb 1905
marriage record, Emma has her name as Emmie.
