His paternal grandparents were Thomas Sears and Elizabeth (?); his maternal grandparents were Thomas Searles and Elizabeth (?). He had six brothers and a sister, named Wyatt, Vincent, Alfred F., Bishop Harrison, William, John A. and Frances. He was the third oldest of the eight children.
