Joseph Sears must have grown up Rowan Co., NC. The marriage bonds of
several of his brothers are recorded there. Joseph's marriage bond to
Elizabeth Searles (17 July 1784) is recorded in Orange Co. NC and Joseph
is listed in Orange Co., NC in the 1790 census.
Between 1812 and 1827 the Joseph Sears family moved on to Georgia.
Joseph purchased land in Newton Co., GA in 1827.
This same land has a deed recorded in 1832 wherein one-half interest
is transferred to Alfred Sears by Wyatt, Vincent, Bishop, William,
Anderson, John A., and Frances (f) Sears. This seems to indicate that
Joseph died and that the siblings' share is being acquired by son Alfred.
The remaining one-half interest is retained by Joseph's widow Nancy.
Nancy and Alfred sold the entire property in 1834.
Joseph is not found as head of household in the 1830 census, so he
must have died between 1827 and 1830.
Records have not been found to place a marriage date on the marriage
between Joseph and Nancy, however, it is assumed that Elizabeth Searles
is the ancestor mother of Joseph's children.
Orange Co., North Carolina was created in 1752 from the larger Bladen,
Granville and Johnston counties. Later in 1777 Caswell Co. was created
from the "Northern Division" of Orange Co. Later in 1791, Pearson Co. was
created from the "Eastern" half of Caswell Co. and in 1840 Alamance Co.
was created from the
"Western" half of Orange Co. Also part of Durham Co. was created in 1881
from the "Eastern" portion of Orange Co. So any of the following
Surname's could have been recorded in the above Counties and never even
moved!
