From The Elmore Express, Tuesday, Apr 13, 1886:
Mr. W. T. J. Sears, probably better known as "Bud" Sears, was drowned at
William's Mills, a few miles from Buyck, in this county, on Tuesday
last. It seems that he, with two others, were crossing the swollen
stream above the dam, when a raft or drift timbers struck the bateau,
knocking them out. They were washed over the dam but saved themselves by
catching to and ascending some trees. Mr. Sears finally concluded to
swim out, attempting which he lost his life; the others were saved. The
body had not been recovered at last account.
The Elmore Express, Apr 10 (?), 1886:
The body of Mr. Bud Sears was recovered same day since just where he last
went down. His friends say they are satisfied that he was seriously, if
not fatally, hurt by floating timbers, from all indications, or he quite
likely would not have been drowned, as he was one of the best swimmers
known in the county around.
