Mary E. was born in July 1870.1 Mary E.'s father was Charles W. Gavin and her mother was Mary Ann Garrett. Her maternal grandparents were William Walter Garrett and Nancy Sansom. She had seven brothers and six sisters, named Thomas William, Stephen Blocker, Samuel Jefferson, Robert M., John Hiram L. B., Charles W., Jr., Oscar, Nancy Elizabeth, Lucy Ann, Sophia Ann, Frances E., Eliza Ann and Elie B.. She was the sixth youngest of the fourteen children.-
