Ron,
I'll be more than happy to fill in some of the Castellaw-Davis
line
for you...if you'll excuse my presentation. I hope this comes out in a
logical form and provides the info you need/want; I apologize beforehand
(if it doesn't) or if I end up rambling...please don't hesitant to "call"
me on it and I'll clarify my muddling! Anyway, here goes...
James Anderson Monroe Davis, b 9 Oct 1832 Montgomery Co, AL; d 9 Jan 1913
Live Oak Co, TX (we think); and Malissa Castellaw, b 3 Feb 1842 Mont Co
AL d
2(?) Dec 1936 Scurry Co Tx, (I also have spelling as Castlelaw, Castelow,
etc.) were married 22 Apr 1858 in Mont. Co, AL. [JAM was son of John V
Davis b ca1801-02 GA d 10 May 1817 unknown place and Julia Parker
Knight b 3 May 1805 York Co?, SC d 17 Dec 1876 Mont. Co, AL. Julia's
parents both born in NC, her mother was a Foreman; John's mother was a
Simmons. I have some info on the other children of Davis-Knight and of
Knight-Foreman and Davis-Simmons if you want that.... (They had 8-12
kids each so won't include that here!) ]
JAM's parents must have been fairly well-to-do, I have numerous Land
Office
Records for John V (such as you sent about BF) totalling nearly 640 acs
in Mont Co and he also had a slave schedule in the 1860 census. They were
located in/near Ramah(Ramer?) in south central Mont Co. John and family
appear in 1840-50-60 census for Mont Co.
JAM and Malissa appear in census in 1860 Mont Co AL, 1870-80 Henderson
Co, TX and in 1900 he is in Runnels Co TX. (A little family "scandal",
in 1900 Malissa is in Scurry Co Tx with one of her daughter's and states
she is a widow. In Runnels Co JAM states he is divorced!?) There are
several Davis children and a Jonas Castellaw also in this county census.
JAM was a Confederate veteran and applied for a TX Conf Vet pension (I
have a copy of this); apparently they relocated to Henderson Co TX after
the war. A James AM Davis appears in the Index to TX Deaths 2 Nov 1925
but I have not attained a copy of this. (Not sure about the date
discrepancy, except that he probably died destitute, per info from Vet
Ap, and perhaps Malissa or one of children filed death at the late date?)

I apologize for some of the sketchy info; I am a notoriously bad
organizer (a sure bane for serious geneologists!) and may possibly be
able to add additional info...if I can find it!? As mentioned, I do have
more info but wasn't sure how much you wanted or which direction to go.
I will be happy to send more if desired. Interestingly, the Davises have
led us to Hancock Co GA and some other "cousins" are attempting to tie
them to Davis info from Maryland, Knight info in NC, etc. I appreciate
the info on the Castellaw's, again; hopefully this will be a lead to get
around our previous roadblock. Keep in touch a
