JOHN AND PEARL COLE
John Robert Cole, the third of five children, was born on August 5, 1892
in Lampasas County, Tx. His parents were Robert Munford Cole, born in TN,
October 1851 and Eliza Victoria Davis, born in AL, March 2,1866. The
family moved from Lampasas County to Scurry County about 1897. John's
future wife Pearl Lewis, was born December 23,1895 at McKinney, TX in
Collin County. She was one of six children born to Frances Marion Lewis
and Lou Myers. After the death of his wife, Lou, Frances Marion and the
six small children came to Scurry County by covered wagon arriving in
1902. They settled southwest of Ira near the Colorado River on land that
Pearl's Grandfather Lewis had homesteaded. They lived in a two bedroom
house with a dugout for a kitchen. Pearl and the other children walked
across the Colorado River and hills about four or five miles to school.
Later she attended school at Ira, Tx and went to church at Center View
west of Ira. Pearl worked as an operator in the first telephone exchange
at Ira. John Robert Cole and Pearl Lewis were united in marriage at Ira,
December 23, 1915. For a time John worked on a ranch, then fired a steam
boiler at a Snyder gin, before becoming self-employed as a concrete
contractor, brick mason. He became proficient in his trade and did the
masonry work on many fine homes and building and unique fireplaces
throughout Scurry County and adjacent counties. As a hobby, he collected
small colorful rocks and petrified wood throughout Scurry County and
constructed art in the form of chairs, tables, birdbaths, mail boxes and
flower planters. John and Pearl Cole had three children born, raised and
educated in Snyder. Leslie Marion married Mary Lou Bailey, Zora Lee
married Charlie McKinney and Johnnye Elizabeth married Jack Warren.
