Mabel was born in 1156 in Clare, Suffolk, England.  Mabel's father was Roger de Clare the Good Earl of Hertford and her mother was Maud de St. Hilary. She had five brothers and a sister, named James, Roger, John, Henry, Sir Richard FitzRoger de and Aveline. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named William de Albini V, Cecily and Agnes (Avice).  She died at the age of 47 in 1203.
