Thomas was born on September 8th, 1735 in Scituate or Johnston, Providence Co., RI. Thomas' father was John Mathewson and his mother was Phoebe Steere. His paternal grandparents were John Mathewson and Deliverance Malavery. He had three sisters named Phebe, Mary and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the four children.-
