Lovett was born in 1858 in Alabama.  Lovett's father was Lovett Ryals and his mother was Mary Stower.  His paternal grandfather was Richardson Ryals; his maternal grandfather was Jackson Stowers. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William H, Richard Bryant, John Austin, Coat, Edy E and Mary H.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
