John was born in 1854. John's father was Thomas Day Allen and his mother was Martha Carruth. His paternal grandparents were John B. Allen and Nancy Day. He had a brother and four sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named William Day, Nancy, Sarah, Matilda Clemetyne, Martha and Baby. He was the third oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and four half-sisters, and also a half-sibling of unknown gender, named Thomas, Cora, Emma L, Mary, Nellie and Baby.-
