Salina was born in 1824 in Tennessee.1 Salina's father was Joshua Shipley and her mother was Mary Strickler. Her paternal grandparents were Eli Shipley and Elizabeth Kingston; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Strickler and Christina Burner. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Benjamin, Reuben, Frederick B., Joshua, Rachel, Mary, Nancy Winifred and Christena E.. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
