Benjamin was born about 1815.1 Benjamin's father was Joshua Shipley and his mother was Mary Strickler. His paternal grandparents were Eli Shipley and Elizabeth Kingston; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Strickler and Christina Burner. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Reuben, Frederick B., Joshua, Rachel, Salina, Mary, Nancy Winifred and Christena E.. He was the oldest of the nine children.-
