Sarah Jane was born in 1845 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Sarah Jane's father was Wesley Asbury Phipps and her mother was Eliza Jane Hale. Her paternal grandparents were William Phipps and Sarah Erwin; her maternal grandparents were Philip Smith Hale and Elizabeth Bachman. She had five brothers and four sisters, named William S., Nathan L., John M., Joshua, James W., Anna E., Mary E., Fanny H. and Catherine. She was the oldest of the ten children.-
