His paternal grandparents were William Phipps and Sarah Erwin; his maternal grandparents were Philip Smith Hale and Elizabeth Bachman. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William S., Nathan L., Joshua, James W., Sarah Jane, Anna E., Mary E., Fanny H. and Catherine. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.-
