Her paternal grandparents were William Phipps and Sarah Erwin; her maternal grandparents were Philip Smith Hale and Elizabeth Bachman. She had five brothers and four sisters, named William S., Nathan L., John M., Joshua, James W., Sarah Jane, Anna E., Fanny H. and Catherine. She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.-
