John Dowell was born about 1873 in Phil., Casey County, Kentucky.1 John Dowell's father was James Marion Combest and his mother was George Ann Sloan. His paternal grandparents were Austin Eden Combest and Margaret Combest; his maternal grandparents were James Sloan and Nancy A. King. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named Franklin Pierce, William Roe, Liberty Madison, Dewitt Clinton, George Marion, Christopher Columbus, Erasmus Grant, Sarah W., Luticia C., Mary Manderville and Flora Pierce\Paradise. He was the youngest of the twelve children. He died due to Brights Disease in Lebanon, Kentucky.1 General Notes
