Mary's father was John Ross Kegans and her mother was Clarinda Pevehouse. Her paternal grandparents were James Kegans and Mary Ross; her maternal grandparents were James Pevehouse and Mary (Polly) Hodge. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James, John, William Foster, Elizabeth Jane, Nancy, America and Elsie.-
