John R. was born in 1847 in Poinsett Co, AR.1   John R.'s father was Nicholas Grinder and his mother was Margaret Calhoun.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Grinder and Francis ?. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William P., James A., Jasper W., Elizabeth, Mary K., Sarah Ann, Margaret Sullivan and Martha C..  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
