James A. was born on September 10th, 1856 in Van Buren Co, AR.1   James A.'s father was Nicholas Grinder and his mother was Margaret Calhoun.  His paternal grandparents were Joshua Grinder and Francis ?. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John R., William P., Jasper W., Elizabeth, Mary K., Sarah Ann, Margaret Sullivan and Martha C..  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
