  James Chalmers Knox, kn own as "Chal or Chally" to his family, was a
  reserved gentlemen, who was know n to speak his mind.  He loved gardening,
  especially growing camelias -- and was known to protect his prize bushes
  from late spring freezes by putting his family's winter coats around
  them.  All the neighborhood squirrels knew him as the "peanut" man -- and
  came to eat nuts from his hand on pleasant afterno ons under the trees in
  his back yard in Greensboro, North Carolina.
  He moved his family from Caldwell Station, North Carolina to Greensboro,
  North Caroli na, about 1938, and first appears in the Greensboro City
  Directory in 1939. He is listed as a carpenter and living with his
  family at 1615 Elwood Avenue.
  Before his employment with Cone Mills, he was a farmer, and a home
  builder. He liked felt hats and cigars.
  Following is his obituary, published in the Gr eensboro Daily News,
  November 1, 1962:
  "James Chalmers Knox Sr., 70, of 1611 Elwood Avenue, died at 4:26 a.m.
  yesterday at his home.
  Mr. Knox was a nati ve of Mecklenburg County, but has been a resident of
  Greensboro for the past 40 years.  He was retired construction
  superintendent with Cone Mills, a memb er of Bethel Presbyterian Church,
  and a member of Buena Vista Lodge of Odd Fe llows.
  Mr. Knox is survived by his wife, the former Ina Ruth Rush; one son,
  James C. Knox Jr., of Greensboro; five daughters, Mrs. E. N. Jenkins, of
  Guil ford College, Mrs. R. F. Steele, of Gulfport, Miss., Mrs. K. N.
  Kirkman of Gr eensboro, Mrs. J. L. Reece of Greensboro, and Mrs. C. G.
  Mayberry of Greensbo ro; 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild; three
  brothers,  Mr. J. B. Kno x, of Davidson, Mr. R. B. Knox and Mr. W. M. Knox
  of Huntersville; and three sisters, Mr. C. M. Cashion and Mrs. J. W.
  Washam, both of Huntersville, and M rs. George Crawford of Williamsburg,
  Virginia.
  The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. today at the Lambeth-Troxler Chapel,
  the Rev. John P. Stephenson, paste r of Glenwood Presbyterian Church
  officiating.  Pallbearers will be Jan, Nick and Hall Jenkins, Larry
  Atkins, Herbert Knox, and J. W. Washam."
