Nancy was born in 1781 in Washington, Virginia.1   Nancy's father was Samuel Buchanan and her mother was Elizabeth Duncan.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Buchanan and Martha McNutt. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Andrew, Samuel, John Brown, Martha S, Jane, Mary, Elizabeth and Peggy.  She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
