James H. was born in 1846 in Harrison County, Indiana. James H.'s father was Richard Roberts and his mother was Mary Jane Hancock. His maternal grandparents were Mathew Hancock and Elizabeth Hooker. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William Cravens, Samuel Addison, Sarah Ann "Sallie" and Lydia Evaline "Evie". He was the oldest of the five children.General Notes

Four-year-old James, the first-born of Mary Jane Hancock and Richard Roberts is listed with his family in the 1850 census records, but does not appear on subsequent census records. Brother Samuel is later mentioned as being the youngest of four children born to Richard and Mary Jane Hancock Roberts. There is a small headstone next to Mary Jane and Richard's stone at Hancock Chapel Cemetery, Hancock Chapel, Blue River Township, Harrison County, Indiana. The marker is illegible. This could be James'.
