Orson William was born on December 2nd, 1846 in , Davis, IA.1 Orson William's father was John O Shafer and his mother was Hannah Casto. His maternal grandparents were Abel Casto and Mary Polly Galland. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John Henry, Oliver, James Alma, Frank, Charles, Mary Adaline, Eliza, Eleanor and Maybell. He was the oldest of the ten children.-
