Narrative
[williamstone.FTW]
!Born on the old homestead near Fairview, Beaver County, PA. Here his early life was spent and in young manhood he became a farmer, inheriting a portion of his fathers estate, he added some land to his share and became the owner of 75 acres. He built a substantial dwelling and remodeled a barn that stood on the property, there residing until his death. With his wife he was a member of the Reformed Church. In political life, he had always adhered to the principles of the Republican Party, but in his later life when the question of temperance became more and mnore of a national issue, he took a firm stand fot the Prohibition Party using his utmost effort and every influence in its behalf. In the early part of the war of the Rebellion, when it was thought that a few battles would cause the conflict to come to a decisive end, he enlisted for 90 days in Knapp's Battalion of Heavy Artillery. When at the expiration of that term of service, the end of the struggle seemed so indeterminate, he re-enlisted in the 100th Regt Penn Volunteer Infantry and was at Appomattox Courthouse just prior to the close of the war.!per military records: Daniel's first enlistment, 8 May 1864 (Wed) left
home at five o'clock, went to Pittsburgh and enlisted in Knapp's Battery
was examined, sworn and mustered in. On the back page he says he was
in the US service for 100 days in 1864, he was released due to illness.
Second enlistment, Tues 28 Feb 1865, went to Pittsburgh enlisted in Cpt
McCormick's Co for one year. Sworn and examined, got $50 bounty, went
home this evening. Wed, 8 Mar 1865, left home in the morning for his
company, was mustered in and recieved his clothing, left Pittsburgh jfor
