Eleanor was born about 1260 in Ryhall, Rutland, England.1 Eleanor's father was Hugh le Despenser Lord Despenser and her mother was Aline Basset. Her paternal grandfather was Hugh le Despenser; her maternal grandparents were Philip Basset and Hawise de Louvaine. She had a brother and a sister, named Hugh le Despenser the Elder and Joan (Anne).
