1 Hugh le Despenser the Elder's father was Hugh le Despenser Lord Despenser and his mother was Aline Basset. His paternal grandfather was Hugh le Despenser; his maternal grandparents were Philip Basset and Hawise de Louvaine. He had two sisters named Eleanor and Joan (Anne).
