Walter was born about 1929 in South Carolina.1 Walter's father was Edgar Lafayette Shealy and his mother was Ellen Heise. His paternal grandparents were Westley Killian Shealy and Agnes Wessinger. He had a brother and a sister, named Edgar Lafayette and Jane.-
