Martha Jane was born about 1834. Martha Jane's father was Elijah D. Roach and her mother was Elizabeth Butler. Her maternal grandparents were Zachariah Butler and Nancy Bullard. She had five brothers and nine sisters, named John A., James M., John Sanders, Jesse, Leroy Thomas, Julia, Harriett, Louisa, Caroline, Sarah, Adeline, Jessie, Susan F. and Malissa.-
