Leonidas Echols was born in 1839. Leonidas Echols' father was Thomas Rainey and his mother was Mary Claiborne Echols. His paternal grandparents were James Rainey and Nancy Samuels; his maternal grandparents were Obediah Echols and Lucy Atkinson Jackson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James Obediah, Claudius H., Thomas Claiborne, Josiah Lawson, Samuel Brame, Cornelia Mutter and Anne Janette. He was the youngest of the eight children.
