Rachel was born in 1749 in Edgecombe Co., NC. Rachel's father was John Henry Pryor and her mother was Margaret Gaines. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Pryor and Elizabeth Virginia Green; her maternal grandparents were George Gaines and Ellinor ?. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Green, Robert, Abner, John Henry, Lucy, Elizabeth, Rhoda, Mildred Kathleen, Leah, Henrietta and Dorothy. She was the fourth youngest of the twelve children.-
