John B. Fontaine 
John B. was born about 1840. John B.'s father was Edward Fontaine and his mother was Maria Louisa Pollard. His paternal grandparents were William Fontaine and Anne Morris; his maternal grandparents were ? Pollard and E. P. ?. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Edmund, Richard Morris, Sarah Louisa and Rose Maury. He was the third youngest of the six children. He died on October 1st, 1864 in battle near Petersburg, VA. He was buried in "Beaver Dam", Rt. 738, Hanover Co., Virginia.1 General Notes

John B. Fontaine
Medical Director Cavalry Corps Army of Northern Virginia.
Died on the field of battle near Petersbburg
on the 1st of October 1864
in this 24th year.
A graduate of Medicine in 1860 he entered
the Confederate Service i April 1861, twenty years old,
and reached the highest position in his department.
He had been spared through the dangers of may a
skirmish when he rode in the ranks with Stuart and Hampton,
and at last was mortally wounded while rendering
professional aid to a dying general.
