John was born about 1641.  John's father was William Claiborne and his mother was Elizabeth Butler.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Clayborn and Sara Smyth; his maternal grandparents were John Butler and Jane Elliott. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Leonard, Jane and Elizabeth.
