Lavinia's father was John Hill Carter and her mother was Jane Loughborough. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Carter and Janet Carter. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Cassius, Nathaniel Loughborough, Shirley, Caroline and Eliza. She had a half-sister named Jane Eliza.-
