Henry Lewis' father was Lewis Marion Carter and his mother was Mary Frances Baker. His paternal grandparents were Henry Fauntleroy Carter and Mary Thompson; his maternal grandparents were Richard Baker and Delia Ann Southall Statton. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William Thomas, Richard W., Samuel Justin, George Edward, Ophelia Elizabeth, Annetta M., Josephine C., Sarah E. and Mary Ann.-
