Sylvanus was born in 1833 in Hanover Co., VA.  Sylvanus' father was Robert Askew and his mother was Nancy Stanley. He had six brothers named John, Joseph, Alfred, Alexander, Gamaliel and Silas.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
