Silas was born about 1831 in Hanover Co., VA.  Silas' father was Robert Askew and his mother was Nancy Stanley. He had six brothers named John, Joseph, Alfred, Alexander, Gamaliel and Sylvanus.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died about 1894 in Beaverdam, Hanover Co., VA.
