Joseph was born in 1819 in Hanover Co., VA.  Joseph's father was Robert Askew and his mother was Nancy Stanley. He had six brothers named John, Alfred, Alexander, Gamaliel, Silas and Sylvanus.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
