His paternal grandparents were Robert Anderson and Elizabeth Mary Overton; his maternal grandparents were Richard Clough and Anne Poindexter. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Robert, Matthew, Richard Clough, George Augustus, Samuel, Cecelia, Elizabeth, Mary, Ann and Judith Clough.-
