Berte was born in 1759 in Hunskår i Breim.  Berte's father was Jorgen Borgeson and her mother was Anne Rasmusdotter.  Her paternal grandparents were Borge Anderson and Gullbjorg Jorgensdotter. She had a brother and five sisters, named Rasmus, Sofie, Sofie, Marte, Gullbjorg and Johanne.  She was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
