Lourens was born in 1873 in Aruba.  Lourens' father was Eustachius Flanegin and his mother was María Marcelina Vrolijk. He had eight brothers and eight sisters, named Juan, Jan, Cajus, Domingo, Pedro, Ciriaco, Teolindo, Mario, Cecilia, Sarafina, Petrona, Christina, Clemance, Maria, Ruperta and Wilhelmina.  He was the second oldest of the seventeen children.  He died at the age of 70 in 1943 in Aruba.
