Thomas was born in 1784 in Marden, Kent.  Thomas' father was Zebulon STANLEY and his mother was Ann SHAW.  His maternal grandparents were William SHAW and Sarah. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Samuel, David, Stephen, James and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
