James was born in 1794 in Marden, Kent.  James' father was Zebulon STANLEY and his mother was Ann SHAW.  His maternal grandparents were William SHAW and Sarah. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Thomas, Samuel, David, Stephen and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
