Lewis was born in 1751 in Egerton, Kent.  Lewis' father was John DENCE and his mother was Ann PETIT.  His paternal grandparents were John DENCE and Elisabeth LEWIS; his maternal grandparents were John PETIT and Sarah RANSLEY. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Robert and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 66 in 1817 in Westwell, Kent.  He was buried on September 11th, 1817 in Westwell, Kent.
